Tracking tyres at the races
Cars and trucks involved in National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing, Inc. (NASCAR) events in the USA are now fitted with Goodyear tyres carrying passive RFID tags.
The unique ID numbers in the RFID tags help Goodyear keep track of the thousands of tyres it leases to NASCAR racing teams, and also helps NASCAR track down any racers with illegally altered tyres.
Tyre tags cost about $1 each - they use particularly expensive wire antennas, embedded in the tyre during manufacturing or added later with a special rubber patch. They have to be more rugged than simpler tags placed using in the supply chain.
