Smartcards

Smartcards are particularly suited to applications where a relatively large amount of data has to be stored in a portable, user-acceptable, read-writable form, or in a form that can be easily updated (see next page).

Other features include
  • substantial support base for applications.
  • contact, close proximity (contactless cards) and a larger range vicinity read capability.
  • medium to reasonably high data storage capabilities.
  • relatively low cost cards and read technology.
  • better and more selective security capabilities – including encryption - than other card-based technologies.
